Create Diagram elements

You can create a diagram from previously configured elements or add new elements to the SMC and draw the diagram simultaneously.

Steps

  1. Select Configuration, then browse to Monitoring.
  2. Browse to Diagrams.
  3. Right-click Diagrams, then select New > Connectivity Diagram, New > VPN Diagram, or New > IP Diagram according to which diagram type you want to create.
  4. Create a diagram using the various options.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Name the diagram, then add an optional comment for your own reference.
  7. (Optional) Select a parent diagram for the new diagram.
  8. Click OK.

Diagram Editor

Use this editor to create and modify element diagrams.

Option Definition
Resources pane — Use this pane to create and add elements to a diagram.
Search Opens a search field for the selected element list.

Click X to close the search field.

Up (Backspace) Returns to the previous folder.
New Opens the associated dialog box to create an element.
Tools
  • Show Deleted Elements — Shows elements that have been moved to the Trash.
  • Expand All — Expands all elements.
  • Collapse All — Collapses all elements.
  • Refresh View — Refreshes the list of elements.
  • Check Policy Refresh Needs — Opens the Policy Refresh Needs dialog box.
  • Capture Traffic — Opens the Traffic Capture Task Properties dialog box.

Diagram Navigation pane

Click and drag in the area outside the black rectangle to zoom in and out.

Click inside the black rectangle to adjust which part of the diagram is shown.

Toolbar
Save Saves the changes.
Monitoring Shows the status of the elements used in the diagram.
Zoom In Zooms the diagram view in.
Zoom Out Zooms the diagram view out.
Zoom
  • Default Zoom — Resets the zoom to the default level.
  • Zoom All — Zooms so that all elements are shown.
  • Zoom Width — Zooms so that all elements fit horizontally.
  • Zoom Height — Zooms so that all elements fit vertically.
Collapse selected component(s) Expands the element to show the child elements.
Expand selected component Hides the child elements.
Undo Operation Undoes the last change made.
Redo Operation Redoes the last change that was undone.
Layout tools Arranges the elements in the diagram.
  • Auto Layout — Arranges the elements automatically.
  • Geolocation Layout — Arranges elements by geographic location.
  • Grid Layout — Arranges selected elements in a grid layout.
  • Star Layout — Arranges selected elements in a star layout.
  • Row Layout — Arranges selected elements in a row.
  • Column Layout — Arranges selected elements in a column.
  • Trim Row — Aligns the row.
  • Trim Column — Aligns the column.
  • Horizontal Flip — Flips the order of selected elements vertically.
  • Vertical Flip — Flips the order of selected elements vertically.
  • Rotate — Rotates selected elements in an anticlockwise direction.
Select components Selects an individual component or, by holding and dragging, multiple components.
Hand tool Drags and drops the elements to their places.

In addition to moving individual elements by dragging and dropping, you can also use the Hand Tool to move all elements in a diagram.

Connection tool After you add elements to a diagram, you can connect the elements automatically or manually. The automatic connections are based on the IP addresses of the elements or on the Routing configuration.
Add turning point

To help you maintain the clarity of your diagrams, you can also use turning points. Turning points are useful, for example, in complex diagrams where connections would otherwise cross each other.

A turning point is created by clicking the Add Turning Point button in the toolbar, clicking in the middle of the connection between the two elements and dragging the turning point to the direction of your choice to create an angle.

Text tool Adds text to the diagram.

Clicking the place where you want to add the comment opens the Text Properties dialog box.

<Element type> Select the element that you want to add to the diagram, then click on the diagram.
Option Definition
Info pane Shows information about the selected element.

Image Properties dialog box

Use this dialog box to add a custom background image for diagrams.

Option Definition
Name The name of the element.
File Shows the file name of the image.
Browse Allows you to select an image file. Opens the Browse dialog box.
Preview Shows a preview of the image.
